About the role
Job Description:
Area Medical Director
At Chewy, we believe great work starts with great people! Chewy Vet Care is changing the veterinary care experience from the ground up by creating an environment where veterinary teams can succeed every day. As a comprehensive pet healthcare practice, we deliver connected care through a high standard of veterinary medicine, supported by purpose-built technology and the broader capabilities of Chewy. Our mission is to become the most trusted and convenient destination for pet parents and partners everywhere. Caring for the pets we love starts with greater care for our veterinary teams—and that means giving our teams the leadership, resources, and support they need to deliver exceptional medicine.
Our Opportunity You will lead medical excellence and veterinary team development across Chewy Vet Care practices in the Atlanta, Georgia area, helping our veterinarians deliver high-quality, evidence-based care while building an environment where teams can grow and thrive. You will directly manage Lead Veterinarians and partner closely with field operations and cross-functional teams to connect medical priorities with an exceptional experience for pets, pet parents, and Team Members. You’ll coach and develop veterinary leaders, strengthen clinical standards, and use insights from practice performance to identify opportunities for continued improvement. This is a field-based role, with the majority of your time spent onsite in our practices, staying connected to our teams and practicing medicine as needed.
What you will do: • Lead and develop Lead Veterinarians and veterinary teams across assigned geographic area practices through regular coaching, mentorship, clinical observation, and actionable feedback. • Champion high standards of veterinary medicine by conducting chart reviews, supporting complex cases and escalated care concerns, and reinforcing consistent clinical protocols across practices. • Partner with field operations leaders to align medical and operational priorities, strengthen practice workflows, support scheduling and DVM staffing needs, and deliver an exceptional pet parent experience. • Develop veterinary talent by contributing to hiring, onboarding, performance management, and professional development, including support for new graduates and veterinarians taking on expanded leadership responsibilities. • Improve clinical outcomes by reviewing relevant performance metrics, identifying opportunities, and working with veterinary leaders to strengthen care delivery, case efficiency, client communication, and practice performance. • Collaborate with regional and cross-functional partners to introduce medical programs, tools, systems, and workflows that enhance patient care and the veterinary team experience. • Support workforce planning and the continued growth of Chewy Vet Care, including helping new practices establish effective teams, clinical standards, and a supportive culture from the start. • Practice veterinary medicine as needed, remaining connected to the day-to-day experience of our teams, pets, and pet parents while modeling Chewy Vet Care’s commitment to high-quality, compassionate care. • Build an inclusive, learning-focused environment where Team Members can ask questions, share feedback, develop their skills, and work collaboratively to improve pet health and well-being.
What you will need: • 5+ years of veterinary experience in general medicine and surgery, with demonstrated experience coaching, developing, or leading veterinary professionals. • DVM or VMD degree from an AVMA-accredited college or an ECFVG/PAVE-equivalent program. • Active veterinary license in good standing in Georgia, or the ability to obtain the required license before practicing in the state. • Required veterinary registrations and credentials in good standing, or the ability to obtain them, consistent with Chewy Vet Care practice requirements. • Experience applying high-quality, evidence-based medicine while supporting consistent clinical standards and an exceptional patient and pet parent experience. • Ability to communicate clear clinical guidance, constructive feedback, and expectations to veterinarians, practice teams, operational partners, and cross-functional stakeholders. • Experience using clinical and practice performance information to identify opportunities, coach teams, and improve outcomes. • Ability and willingness to work primarily onsite across Chewy Vet Care practices in the Atlanta area, with regular travel between assigned practices and occasional travel for company meetings, events, or training.
